What is Higo Morning Glory?
The Higo Morning Glory is a traditional horticultural plant originating in Kumamoto, cultivated since the Edo period by samurai families.
Its distinctive feature is the unique training method called
“Kobachi-Hondai-Zukuri.” The plant’s height is kept to about three to four times that of the pot, without pinching the main vine. The first flower blooms at about one-quarter of the plant’s height, creating a
harmonious balance between the pot, the plant’s form, and the blossom.
Although once thought to have disappeared due to World War II and the devastating 1953 flood, the variety was preserved thanks to the efforts of Ms. Sueko Tokunaga and revived in 1961 with the establishment of the “Ryōka-kai” society.
