An elegant garden
dating back to the 17th century

Suizenji Jōjuen is a promenade garden (kaiyū-shiki-teien) in Kumamoto City, constructed by Lord Hosokawa Tadatoshi in the early 17th century. The artificial hill and its surrounding landscape recreates Mount Fuji and the 53 stations along the Tōkaidō (a historic road connecting Edo and Kyoto), making it a perfect setting to enjoy the natural beauty of the four seasons. Centered on a fresh spring-water pond, this renowned park is also home to Izumi Shrine and a Noh theatre. Enjoy a moment of tranquility while encountering the history and culture of Kumamoto.

Izumi Shrine

Izumi Shrine is located within Suizenji Jōjuen, and is dedicated to the historical lords of Kumamoto, beginning with Hosokawa Tadatoshi – the first daimyo of the domain. People have visited throughout the ages to pray for household prosperity and good fortune in military endeavours. Traditional festivals and performances are still regularly held at the shrine today, bringing Kumamoto's unique culture and history to life. It is known by locals as both a tranquil site of prayer and a place to enjoy seasonal events.
